As Good As It Gets: New Caledonia

We are in New Caledonia (see sv-wilhelm.com for map). Last week, we travelled north along the lagoon inside the reef that protects this beautiful country. Our favorite spot was Ilot Tenia. This is an idyllic white sand island, just inside the barrier reef. It has been designated as an environmental reserve. The water was beautiful, the snorkeling fantastic. The mainland and its mountains in the background are dramatic.
Here are some of the photos we took during the days we spent there.
I have not found a good way to post photos from these out of the way spots. At this moment, I am using limited wireless access from the local library ("wifi" pronounced "weefee" in this French speaking country.)

Grace a la Bibliotheque Bernheim

Noumea is the capital of New Caledonia. I was able to take my computer to the library and use the wireless connection to post these photos. ("WIFI" pronounced "weefee" in this French speaking country.)
Noumea has fabulous French pastries and baquettes (see top photo), an open air market where we buy fresh fruits and vegetables, and a fish market (below) where the patient fish lady listens to our stumbling speech and cuts totally fresh tuna steaks for both of us at a total cost of about $5.50 US.
